Today's news:
Every sign is good :
Bowman said that “every sign is good” that Phelps is primed for a strong performance to springboard him toward Rio.
But Bowman, who will serve as head coach of the US men’s team at the Games, also admitted to uncertainty.
“We’re in the ‘I don’t know stage’ right now, but in about three days we’ll know,” Bowman said. “I always don’t really have a feel for it until he swims.”
A few doubts on Bowman’s part might not be a bad thing.
The coach recalled his chilling pessimism prior to the 2007 world championships in Melbourne, where Phelps won all five of his individual events and two relays, setting five world records on the way.
The disqualification of the US medley relay team in the heats prevented him from trying for another gold in a meet that he and Bowman believe was his best, better even than his eight-gold performance in Beijing.
“That’s like the best meet a swimmer ever had, and going into that I was convinced things just weren’t going to go well,” Bowman said.
“What I think really doesn’t matter,” Bowman added. “What he does in a couple of days is what’s going to matter.”
